Condoms Can Break
Condoms are said to be up to 98% effective if used correctly, but real life isn’t perfect. Mistakes happen. And condoms break. Estimates show that up to 13% of condom users will end up pregnant. [1]
Condoms can make sex safer (they may help prevent pregnancy and STIs), but they’re not 100% effective. Even when you’re careful, it’s possible for condoms to break. If you’ve found yourself reading this blog after a frantic google search due to a broken condom, start by taking a deep breath! It’s going to be ok. You’re not alone in this.
First Steps
Immediately after discovering the broken condom, use the restroom and bear down to encourage the semen to leave your body. Follow up by washing with warm water and mild soap, but avoid using things like douches as they could cause microtears that could increase your chances of infection. [2]
If you are sexually active, it’s always a good idea for you (and your partner!) to get tested for STIs – especially if a condom breaks. We offer free testing and treatment for some common STIs. You can schedule a free appointment for STI testing today.
When to Test for Pregnancy
Though it might be tempting to take a pregnancy test right away, the results are not likely to be accurate right away. The hormones in your body that result in a positive pregnancy test will not be detected until 9 to 11 days after fertilization. When it’s time to take a pregnancy test, you may find extra peace of mind by taking a medical-grade pregnancy test with a doctor or nurse. (PLL can do this for you free of charge! Schedule a free appointment today!)
What if It’s Positive?
A positive result is not a crisis – it’s information. It means a new life has begun, and you now have options and support. Remember that a positive test does not mean your life is over. It does not mean the end to your hopes and dreams. It doesn’t even mean you have to be a parent. You have options, and you deserve to know all the facts about all of them so you can make an informed decision that prioritizes your health and wellbeing. At PLL, we talk through all of these options in a judgment-free, no-pressure space. And we do all of this free and confidentially.
The Emotional Side
There’s no “right way” to feel about an unplanned pregnancy. You may even feel a whole range of emotions, and that’s ok. PLL is a safe place for you to work through those feelings. (We’ve also got programs for men if your partner wants to come, too!) Here are a few quotes from clients who’ve found help at PLL:
- “The women here are loving and caring…”
- “I absolutely love PLL. Everyone is so nice, and they care so much…”
- “Very helpful and kind…kept me calm during this stressful time…”
Tips to Prevent Future Panic
Being equipped with knowledge beforehand is always the best option, so here are a few tips and facts to remember to try to avoid this situation in the future:
- No form of birth control is 100% effective. [3]
- You can get pregnant or contract an STI with even just one sexual encounter.
- Familiarize yourself with the proper usage for condoms.
- Don’t let anyone pressure you into having sex. Only you get to make that decision for yourself.
Your Health. Your Future.
The bottom line is this: accidents happen. But they don’t define you. Your health and wellbeing – physically and emotionally – are very important. Be sure to prioritize yourself every step of the way – from not being pressured into decisions you don’t want to make to making sure you are healthy and informed.
If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy or need to be tested for an STI, reach out to PLL today. We are here to help. There’s never any judgment here, and we don’t charge for any of our services.
