An unplanned pregnancy can bring about a lot of emotions. Let us start by assuring you that it’s totally normal to feel a range of emotions.

It’s ok to feel all the feels.

There is no “normal” way to feel about an unplanned pregnancy, so whether you are feeling positive, negative, confused, or all of the above, don’t feel bad about how you feel.

Let’s break down some possible feelings you may be experiencing if you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy:

You might feel afraid. And that’s ok!

Many women experience fear, and understandably so. It can feel scary not to know what the future holds. However, fear of the unknown does not mean you are weak. You can do hard things! Confidence in your ability to do hard things comes with knowledge and information, and we’re here to help you with that!

You might feel angry. And that’s ok!

Anger may be stemming from feeling helpless or disappointed, or it may be directed toward someone (or seemingly everyone). You don’t have to bury it, but it’s important to process it in a healthy way. Check out some relaxation techniques[1], or talk with a trusted friend or advisor. (We’re here to talk if you need someone!)

You might feel regret. And that’s ok!

Maybe you regret the decisions that led to this, or maybe you regret who you got pregnant with. It’s ok to feel regretful, but don’t let that regret dictate how you feel about yourself. You have the power to take control of the decisions you make about this pregnancy so that you don’t feel more regret in the future. Allow that to inspire you!

You might feel anxious. And that’s ok!

Fear of the unknown may make you feel anxious, but becoming informed about your options will help to ease the anxious feelings as well as the fearful ones. Lean into those relaxation techniques to help you feel grounded.

You might feel depressed. And that’s ok!

Nobody wants to experience depression, but you shouldn’t feel ashamed of it. If you are experiencing depression, remember there is help. Talking with your doctor or a mental health professional is a great first step for treating depression. You can call the mental health hotline[[2] at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) or text 988.
