Do I really need an ultrasound if I’m using the abortion pill?
If you are pregnant, even if you plan to have an abortion or use the abortion pill – it’s important to have an ultrasound.
That can seem a little confusing (we get it!), but there are important reasons to have this ultrasound. Let’s check them out.
Viability
Viability. What’s that? Basically, a viable pregnancy is one that appears to be able to continue growing and developing on its own. An ultrasound gives you a good look at what’s going on inside your body, including determining if there is a heartbeat.
It’s not uncommon for women to experience miscarriage[1], in which case an abortion or the abortion pill would not be necessary.
Location
It might seem odd to need to “locate” your pregnancy. However, it’s necessary. Some pregnancies could implant and begin to develop outside of the uterus. When this happens, it typically occurs in the fallopian tubes and is called an ectopic pregnancy[2].
An ectopic pregnancy is a big health risk to a pregnant woman and is considered a medical emergency. If it isn’t treated immediately, it could cause life-threatening complications. An ultrasound will rule out an ectopic pregnancy. If you do have an ectopic pregnancy, you should not take the abortion pill, and you should get to your doctor asap.
Gestation
Gestation[3] is a term for “how far along you are.” It’s important to determine how far along you are to determine safe next steps.
For example, the abortion pill is not considered safe for women who’ve not had a period in the previous 9 weeks. An ultrasound can help determine the gestational age of your pregnancy and therefore help determine what options are safe (with your well-being in mind!).
